"시드니 포이티에"이후 헐리웃에서 흑인배우들의 위치는 점점 상승하고 있다. "에디 머피"에서 "덴젤 워싱턴"으로 정점을 찍어가는 중에 또한명의 걸출한 흑인 스타가 나온다. 바로 "윌 스미스"이다.
내가 생각하기에는 "윌 스미스"야 말로 피부색에 관계없이 대중적인 인기를 받는 흑인 스타가 아닌가 생각한다. 인종 문제만이 아니라 어느정도 세대간의 벽을 허물고 인기를 유지하는것 같다.
개구장이의 모습으로 출발한 이 발랄한 흑인배우의 모습도 이제 어느덧 세월의 흔적이 묻어나고 이미지 변신을 위해 노력하는것 같다. 심심찮게 진지한 모습을 많이 보여주고 있다.
영화의 이야기는 이렇다.
주인공은 세무원의 신분으로 아무런 관계없는 사람들의 인생에 뛰어들어 그들을 돕는다. 그 사람들과 직접적인 이유나 동기는 없다. 그러던중 심장에 병이 있는 한 여인을 돕고 어느덧 사랑에 빠진다. 하지만 그는 슬프고도 아름다운 목적을 위해 마지막 단계의 행동을 결심한다. 과연 그는 왜? 무슨이유로 사람들을 돕는 것일까? 그리고 그가 행하는 마지막 행동은 무엇일까?
"윌 스미스"는 전작인 [행복을 찾아서]에서도 진지한 모습을 보여주었다. 그의 지금까지의 대체적인 캐릭터는 장난꾸러기이고 무서울것이 없는 쾌활한 남자였다. 즉 [나쁜 녀석들]에서의 그의 모습이 딱! 그의 이미지였고 그 이미지는 아직까지도 유효하다. 하지만 이제 그에게 변신을 해야만 하는 이유가 서서히 다가오는 것이다. 바로 세월의 흐름이다.
비교적 가벼운 [헨콕]에서도 그는 이제 철부지 말썽꾸러기가 아님을 보여준다. 그리고 이 영화 [7파운즈]에서 감동적인 연기를 위해 노력한다. 과연 그는 가벼운 그의 이미지를 넘어 연기파 배우로서 인정을 받을수 있을지?...
[7파운즈] 이 영화는 즐거운 영화가 아니다. 영화홍보에서 나오는 후반부 반전도 사실 큰 것은 아니다. 그렇다고 파도와 같은 감동이 넘실대는 것도 아니다. 어찌보면 주인공을 이해하기도 좀처럼 쉽지 않다. 어떻게 보면 지루하다. 그러나 뭔가 우리에게 주는 한방은 있는듯 하다.
다시한번 사람들과 함께 살아간다는 것에 대해 다시한번 생각하게 해주는 착한 영화였다. 다만 "윌 스미스"가 "로빈 윌리암스", "빌 머레이"같은 코믹배우들의 뒤를 밟아 연기파배우로 들어서게 될지는 아직 잘 모르겠다. 그 평가는 잠시 다음으로 미루어야 되겠다.
그런데 아직 난 "윌 스미스"의 활기찬 모습을 좀더 보고 싶기도 하다.
